Chiefly letters of three generations of the Hampton family, of Hamptonville, N.C. Correspondence (1852-1917) of Col. John Adams Hampton (1836-1917), lawyer, relating to his service during the Civil War, Reconstruction affairs and conditions, politics, local news and conditions, and family business. Correspondence (1918-1951) of Nellie Priscilla (Hampton) Bell (1875-1950), daughter of Colonel Hampton, relating to family matters, including letters from her brother, Leroy John (Lee) Hampton, while serving with the Army Transport Service during World War I, letters exchanged with her daughters, Caroline and Margaret, as each studied music at the Southern Conservatory of Music, Durham, N.C., and letters with the Brown and Gough families of Kansas City, Mo., during the Depression. Also includes Thomas Lindley's (wagonmaker) accounts (1844-1859); Surry County, N.C., constable's receipt book (1834-1840); dry good and notions account book (1869-1870); Charles A. Bell's threshing and baling accounts (1931, 1936-1937); Frank A. Hampton's diary (1903-1905); Nellie Hampton's keepsake album (1899-1917); and miscellaneous material. Other correspondents include Colonel Hampton's wife, Caroline (Brown) Hampton (d. 1929), sons Green Hampton (d. 1903) and Parks Hampton, and daughters Maggie Hampton Bryant and Winnie Hampton (d. 1917).
